I was doing my research work and interview for the BIG network at the Panagbenga Festival Secretariat when the instinct of going back to the station came up to me before lunch time to log-out for my lunch break.
Then when I arrived at the station, a sudden brownout broke the usual routine of the newsroom. A phone call was received by our Executive Producer which prompted us to go to the University of Baguio because fire was already engulfing the UB High School, the Dap-ayan Hall and parts of the RCB Building of the university.
When our news team arrived at the fire area; our crew cab cannot pass as a flood of people were already gathered outside the building. We saw some students and workers of the university carrying anything they can salvage out of the burning building from microscopes to computers.
Baguio City Vice-Mayor and UB legal affairs head Danny Fariñas said in an interview that the parts of the university’s Dap-ayan Hall interiors that collapsed were made of pine wood that easily burns when they reach their kindling point. UB Executive Vice-President Armando Galimba however assured that everything was well taken care of as the university conducts two fire drills for its students and employees yearly. There were no reported injuries and casualties of the fire but estimates of damage may amount to millions of pesos. Initial reports from the fire investigators said that the cause of the fire may be faulty electrical wiring.
